A note about Palmetto Palms:
Historically, palms have provide building material, medicines and food to earn the name of “princes of the plant kingdom.” Symbolic of life in the low country, native Palmetto palm fronds (leaf strips) are the source product of artisan basket weavers who design and plait tender inside fronds into coiled Christmas tree ornaments, hats, baskets, mats, fans, and whisks. The handmade “show baskets” of sweetgrass (sewn with longleaf pine needles and strips of palmetto leaf) command good prices throughout the low country. You’ll find the vendors along the waterfront, River Street.
