On May 2nd in the Oval Office of The White House, representatives from Historic Savannah Foundation and the Isaiah Davenport House received the 2005 Preserve America Presidential Award for Private Preservation from President George Bush and First Lady Laura Bush. The award recognizes the 2000-2003 re-restoration of the historic house, located at 324 East State Street, as well as acknowledging the site's role as the founding action of the Historic Savannah Foundation in the preservation and tourism renaissance in Savannah over the past 50 years. Only four sites are recognized annually with Preserve America Presidential Awards, two for Heritage Tourism and two for Private restoration. Few American cities have such an abundance of historic treasures as Savannah. On these pages, you will find Savannah's designated historic districts, it's most famous historic homes, and a comprehensive review of Savannah's original 24 squares, designed by General James Oglethorpe.

On the western wall of the Customs House is a tablet commemorating the spot where the first public building in Georgia was erected and where Rev. John Wesley preached his first sermon in America, in 1736. Wesley came to this country as a clergyman of the Church of England and later established Methodism in America. Near Wright Square is the Tomo-Chi-Chi boulder erected in memory of the Indian chief who was a companion of General Oglethorpe and the friend and ally of the Colony of Georgia.

Savannah Theater, erected in 1818 and said to be the oldest theater in active use in the country; the famous Washington guns in front of Chatham Artillery Armory which were captured from the British at Yorktown in 1781; the Robinson home, built in 1782, after the British evacuated Savannah; Fort Wayne, named for General Anthony Wayne in 1782 and now the Savannah Gas Company headquarters; Owen House, built in 1815, in which General Lafayette was entertained; a granite seat which marks the spot where, General Oglethorpe pitched his tent and spent his first night on Georgia soil; Spring Hill tablet, opposite Central of Georgia Railway Depot, which marks the spot of a bloody battle in 1779, in which Pulaski was killed, and also Sergeant Jasper; and Oglethorpe Monument in center of Chippewa Square.
