Birds of Summer Fly to Savannah, Georgia Coast!

SAVANNAH Georgia (April 3, 2013) — Who or what keeps going back to the Savannah, Georgia coast area every summer?

Answer: The migrating summer residents — “beaucoups de birds”, according to the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge.  For exploring bird watchers, colorful birds are found only minutes away from Green Palm Inn lodging in the Savannah historic district.

How’d you like to know where to find these fickle summer residents? Field birding guides from the Savannah Ogeechee Audubon group are excellent at birding and assist with birding in coastal Georgia.

Meanwhile for bird watchers eager to photograph and list Atlantic Flyway flocks and waterfowl, here’s an official list of what to find along nearby sandy beaches, tidal creeks and mud flats, maritime forest, woodlands, fresh water wetlands, bottomland hardwood forest, and even urban and suburban parks.

  • Forsyth Park – summer resident nesters include woodpeckers, brown thrashers, mockingbirds, chimney swifts
  • Tybee North Beach – gulls, terns, black skimmers, wood storks
  • Fort Pulaski – nesting bluebirds
  • Skidaway Island State Park – painted bunting, bluebird, summer tanager, orchard oriole
  • Savannah Refuge: least bitterns, purple gallinules (aka Swamp Hen & Yellow-legged Gallinule), Mississippi & swallow-tailed kites
