First Lighthouse on South Atlantic Coast
In 1742, the first aid to navigation in the South was built near the present Tybee Island Lighthouse. The first tower was never lighted and served as a day mark. A second tower, built in 1742 and lighted in 1748, was the third lighthouse in America.
