SAVANNAH Georgia (May 10, 2013) — The core challenge to change and emerge improved is a mammoth undertaking for big business. For a small tourism business on a 4- or 5-digit budget that challenge is bigger, with higher risks when in the midst of America’s economic woes.

New Web site design | Green Palm Inn, Savannah Georgia USA

The owners of the top-rated Green Palm Inn, a 4-bedroom cottage inn in Savannah’s National Historic Landmark District, are smartly braving the USA tough economy. They chose to jump confidently into strategic change and creative processes.

Happily, there is success!

“Our cozy cottage is more popular than ever,” shares co-owner and innkeeper Diane McCray. “How do I know that? Wonderful travelers are changing vacation dates, saying ‘We want to stay with you!’ And, USA and international guests are staying longer — 4 or 5 days instead of 2 or 3. I am so thankful!”

The top-rated inn’s The Softer Side of Savannah personality has melded with substantially bolder brand content. It evolves with the addition of more experiential taglines, Savannah Your Way, and “I [heart] Savannah” introduced on GreenPalmInn.com.

Owners Diane McCray and Gary Crews tapped Savannah-based strategist Sandy Traub to lead their strategic positioning shift. “For Green Palm Inn, the question was never “Will we make a marketing upgrade or shift?”. The questions were “when?” and “how?”.

In a discussion of “Why change?” Sandy points to Albert Einstein’s definition of Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. “The change process is a landscape of land mines dotted with important decisions and logistics. Yet selective, methodical change is good business, really necessary for competitive business development,” Sandy adds.

For Green Palm Inn, where were the new business opportunities? “That’s where critical research and having a strategy first pay off,” Sandy insists.

Guest reviews on the mammoth travel site TripAdvisor.com were the first stop to find initial answers. “Green Palm Inn was and is doing many things right. The challenge was to carefully pair the popular inn with up-trending travel segments,” Sandy concludes.

Nicasio Design LLC was selected to produce the new web site. Leading the development team, Chris Underwood took visual cues from the inn’s new logo designed by Savannah-based Kelly Applegate Design. Travis Sawyer at Creative Approach brought in Earth-tone paper to emphasize the inn’s palm influence in printed pieces. Then, Chris combined the new branding, infused creative elements, and lead the Nicasio team in building the WordPress framework.

With new photos and content added, the end result delivers a feeling of familiarity in the cottage-cozy inn’s new, robust web site.

Experiential photo assets were produced by Guy Smith, Popcorn Octane LLC in Hilton Head Island, SC. That firm had produced the inn’s popular video, The Softer Side of Historic Savannah. For inspiring, out-and-about city photos, the beautiful work of James Byous Photography captured innovative angles and fresh subjects that help to expand the inn’s storyline. Interior photography is by the award-winning Adam Kuehl. Palm photos are by Savannah native Nancy Heffernan, known most recently for Tybee Island photography.

“Our little inn’s web site is the inn’s go-to marketing core. I can now quickly and easily orchestrate our integrated marketing, including social media and my blog,” says Diane McCray. The inn is active in Google’s G+ and YouTube.com, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Pinterest, and FoodSpotting.

Diane’s advice? “Know what problems you want your marketing to help solve. Wrap your head around what you like. Be concise about what you want, not only in look and feel, but business results. Then, tap the best talent and professionals you can afford.”

This optimistic and happy innkeeper believes the old adage is true: first impressions matter. “I wanted to convey sweet efficiency and a gentle welcome — the inn’s local charm, which complements the tourism story of destination Savannah, Georgia. Then, of course, I love a tad of that ‘walk around hooray spirit’ of Dixie. Surely, I got all that was on my wish list!”

SAVANNAH Georgia (May 8, 2013) — It is no wonder that B&B travel reviews posted on TripAdvisor.com praise Green Palm Inn among the top-ranked bed and breakfasts in Savannah.

In addition to cozy lodging and gourmand breakfasts, innkeeper Diane McCray gives answers right off the top of her head for the Top 10 Things to Do in Savannah. This time she shares the top 10 things to do in Savannah late summer 2013.

Not to challenge the late Mr. Apple’s enticing viewpoint, we choose simply to stretch his report of Savannah’s outdoor fame beyond the sweetly fragrance gardens to take in the salty air! The Savannah area is awash with tidewaters and outdoor things to do near Savannah and Tybee Island.

“Like New Orleans and Charleston, Savannah dances to languid rhythms. In the humidity of high summer, the mood becomes even drowsier, as residents retreat to their jasmine-scented gardens.” – R.W. Apple, Jr., Apple’s America

Beach dining near Savannah at North Beach Grill, Tybee Island GA

For a Savannah trip in summer 2013, Diane encourages to get out on the waterways. “Take in the natural beauty laced with heritage, peasant foods, and maritime traditions along the Georgia coast near Savannah,” Diane encourages. Where to stay? Of course, our answer is Green Palm Inn.

1. Bull River Marina sunset cruise. Set out for a quiet, peaceful 2-hour tour that takes in the spectacular setting of the on the Georgia coast. On the early minutes of the cruise Captain “Gator” Hill (quite the storyteller) shares back stories of history near Bull River, Fort Pulaski and Tybee Island and learn a tad about the natural, romantic dance of nature during in the ebb and flow of the tidewaters. The small, laid back marina is located on beautiful Wilmington Island, about half way between Savannah and Tybee Island. After the cruise we recommend dinner at Coco’s Sunset Grille — a best kept secret for seafood and on-the-water local vibes (Lazaretto Creek, Tybee Island).

Organic farm foods fresh from Bethesda Farm, Savannah Georgia

2. Backstory Savannah Tour© with Phil Sellers, Old City Walks. “We admire how this character-rich broadcast- and tour professional sets the scene, spinning authentic tales of Savannah in his entertaining, mystery-teller’s style,” says Diane. Here’s an example of Phil setting the stage: “As the sands of change shift beneath Savannah a glimpse behind the gray bricks of a city ensconced in its hallowed history reveals what millions who flock to the city’s fairyland timelessness never see….”

3. Backyard dining at Cha Bella. “Think farm to table and you’ll come to think as we do: Cha Bella specializes in the organic peasant foods of The South,” states Diane. What a treat to enjoy outdoor dining, tasting the “delicious, organic, and seasonal fare” served outdoors (as well as indoors) only a short walk from Green Palm Inn. Cha Bella is a haven for the vegetarian, and lovers of seafood and grass-fed beef.

4. Savannah Canoe and Kayak tour. If we were not already fascinated by these tour professionals, this kayak tour review would convince us: “We showed up at the beach at 9am, the kayaks lined up and ready to go. Twenty minutes later we were paddling among a family of dolphins. Thanks for a fantastic outing.” Neil Baker, U.K.

5. Tybee beach stroll, (6) Lighthouse tour with (7) sunset dinner (or Sunday buffet) at North Beach Grill. Eclectic Tybee Island is where you’ll discover one of America’s oldest lighthouses (278 steps to the top), complemented by small houses that complete the historic light station.

Crab cakes and sweet potato fries with balsmic sauce | North Beach Grill, Tybee Island, GA.

Between the lighthouse and the beach is North Beach Grill, serving “an eclectic fusion with Caribbean flair”. Tybee Island’s miles of flat public beaches are a ‘must do’ any time of year, but especially in summer when migrating birds stop over.

8. Make it a progressive Thursday night out … Bucky ‘n Barry music in City Market, Trea Gurley at Jazz’d, and light dinner at B&D Burgers in the courtyard. B&D Burger has a 3-lb. burger challenge. Eat it in 35 minutes and the meal is free.

10. Pin Point Heritage Museum tour. The African-American fishing village of Pin Point overlooks the marshes of Moon River. Going to river for seafood, the locals who live at Pin Point say they never go hungry.

For authenticity, the museum is located in a re-purposed oyster and crab factory. Pin Point is home to U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, who spoke at the museum’s opening. The humble village is the beloved home to many descendants of freed slaves, some who still speak “Geechee”or “Gullah”. Curious about the sound? Listen to a sample of Aunt Pearly Sue telling “The Gullah version of The Night Before Christmas“.

Among the grace notes at Green Palm Inn are sensational local culture tips! Don’t you agree? Let us know when you are ready to head our Savannah way!

In the American southeast as we near summertime and the 4th of July, our thoughts turn to gratitude for Savannah’s blessings — its independent spirit, and resilience. The spirit of the place (folk tales, rivers, woods, kindred spirits), and a sense of place (urban architecture, plantings, street culture) are generously portioned into the wonderful, rich mix that allows us to celebrate every day in Savannah.

Heritage is rich, deep and wide in Savannah, Georgia USA.

Green Palm Inn ‘s own Diane McCray participated as a marketing committee volunteer in the filming of a new Savannah travel video for Romantic Inns of Savannah. The 2-minute video highlights the generous complimentary amenities (varied by each B&B owner) in a dozen family-owned Romantic Inns in the historic district. Below is the press release and video. Please enjoy and share your comments.

SAVANNAH, Georgia (April 29, 2013) — In a town popular for its Savannah Film Festival and Hollywood movie making, it is no surprise that standout bed and breakfasts now turn the spotlight to themselves. In The Savannah Way to Stay the Romantic Inns of Savannah LLC highlights an important, yet overlooked word that defines their generosity — complimentary.

“What a delight to be pampered in so many unexpected ways,” announces Jim Carswell of Spyhop Productions, who produced and narrates the video. The association of privately owned Savannah bed and breakfasts in the National Landmark Historic District commissioned the USA travel video.

In just under two minutes the branded content emphasizes the high value and charm found in a dozen family owned and operated Savannah bed and breakfast inns. “Complimentary is a centric common denominator, important to each innkeeper and to each of our guests,” says Jackie Heinz, volunteer chair of the association’s marketing committee and owner of Zeigler House Inn. Each innkeeper chooses his/her own unique combination of complimentary offerings to be included in their lodging rate.

In southern, genteel ways the adjective “complimentary” is seen on-screen but never mentioned. Kudos go to the objectivity of Mari Carswell of Spyhop Productions, who pinpointed “complimentary” as the simple, memorable differentiator.

Complimentary Sweetens (or de-salts) the Deal
Business travelers estimate the value of the Romantic Inns’ “complimentary” offerings would be an additional $75-$125 surcharge (nightly) at a national brand hotel. Especially for travelers with special diets, the complimentary home cooking is a extraordinarily welcome treat. It can be the deal maker, sweetening (or de-salting, de-wheating, de-lactosing) the enticement of B&B lodging in Savannah, Georgia USA.

No doorpost banners or street-side signs announce the long list of complimentary products and services at these historic lodging establishments — each one tucked into prestigious residential neighborhoods of the National Landmark Historic District. “That would be tacky and provoke our neighbors to wag fingers, justly. Savannah’s historic district guidelines won’t permit it,” adds Jackie.

Behind the Scenes: The By Words Are Local and Person-to-Person
“Innkeepers are connoisseurs of the arts, cuisine, literature, and well informed about what is extraordinary to do and see in and near Savannah. We wear a hat that once belonged to the fee-charging travel agent,” adds Diane McCray, co-owner of Green Palm Inn, treasurer of the association and marketing committee member. “We will set up reservations to the area’s top dining spots, arrange travel for sightseeing, set appointments for antique shopping, and pre-purchase special event tickets. Talking personally to a knowledgeable innkeeper is optimal efficiency.”

There are more personal touches behind the scenes. “Like visiting your grandmother who insists on preparing her family’s prized recipes, we are the cooks too, serving deliciousness, minus an a la carte pricing chart. Most inn owners are in the kitchen cooking personally, daily,” states Diane. Before heading to the kitchen she, like most of her colleagues, has been to the grocer that carries favored brands and to the day-boat seafood dock. “On farmers’ market days the innkeepers are there as well, hand selecting what guests will enjoy,” she adds.

First introduced through social media — Twitter, Facebook and the blog stream — The Savannah Way to Stay video will be accessible on RomanticInnsofSavannah.com; BetterWaytoStay.com, a Professional Association of Innkeepers International (PAII) campaign; and on YouTube.com.

“From this day forward our Savannah, Georgia tourism messages will include a lot more of this sweet adjective — complimentary. No more of the Scarlett O’Hara approach of thinking about that tomorrow,” concludes Jackie Heinz.

ABOUT ROMANTIC INNS OF SAVANNAH

A collective marketing association of family–owned historic home inns (circa 1855-1898), Romantic Inns of Savannah LLC interprets and romanticizes southern hospitality a dozen different ways in Savannah, Georgia USA — renown as North America’s most beautiful city. Let Savannah Romance You!™” is the invitation from the non-profit organization. Situated along the southeast Atlantic Ocean coast, Savannah’s National Landmark Historic District (2.5 miles) is home to the city’s smallest restored home inns — private carriage houses to 16-room European-style town homes — that dot the prestigious, quiet residential neighborhoods. Elite among America’s original 13 colonies, Savannah, Georgia is prized for its southern traditions and architecture that survived the American Civil War (1861-1865), urban and coastal landscapes, the arts, and international commerce.
SAVANNAH Georgia (April 8, 2013) — Green Palm Inn, a cottage bed and breakfast in downtown Savannah, is in the neighborhood of African-American history on Greene Square.

The Civil War Sesquicentennial (2011-2015) has spurred us to research that period of Savannah history more to learn what was happening in our Savannah inn’s neighborhood in the 1800s.

Of the Underground Railroad, we discover there were “stations” and champions dedicated to the cause of freeing men, women and children from slavery. In Stories of the Underground Railroad by Anna L. Curtis we read of the volunteer freedom heroes, informally known as “engineers” and “conductors”.

Many who were dedicated to this cause were the Christians and “Friends” — the Quakers — who took to heart the Bible verse condemning slavery. For example, when Friend Hopper rushed to rescue a kidnapped, young African boy — Wajelma (see page 16 at link) — he quoted Deuteronomy 23: 15 to justify the lad’s release – “Thou shalt not deliver unto his master the servant which is escaped from his master unto thee”.

In Savannah, we recommend a visit to First African Baptist Church on Franklin Square, and Fort Pulaski National Monument.

University professor and Savannah historian Charles J. Elmore tells of March Haynes, serving the Union army during the Civil War. “Haynes was an African-American spy and commando under the orders of Brig. Gen. Quincey Gilmore,” explained Elmore.

Fort Pulaski on Cockspur Island (background) birds-eye view from Tybee Island, GA | Library of Congress

“His job was to gather information for the Union Army and other covert activities. But at night, he helped spur the beginning of an escape route to freedom in Savannah from 1860 throughout the Civil War.”

“In the darkness, March Haynes filled his bateau with African Americans and quietly paddled them to freedom at Fort Pulaski.” — Source: Savannah Morning News, April 15, 2004.

For our bed and breakfast guests, Green Palm Inn will make other recommendations for Savannah sightseeing tours with Civil War and/or African-American focus.

Symbolic of safe returns, happy homecomings, safety and assurance, palm fronds are strewn upon the path of returning heroes from battle and returning pilgrims to the Holy Land. The Asian symbolism of the palm is one of renewal. In Judaism, the date palm represents peace and plenty. Palm stems represented long life to the Ancient Egyptians. Judaism, Christianity and Islam all originated and developed in these lands shaded by date palms. Photo used with permission.

Found here are Savannah’s Vietnam Veterans Memorial and historic Harbor Light (1858), a gas-powered light erected as a navigational aid to vessels in the Savannah River. The light stands 77 feet above the river and helped ships avoid the hulls of ships scuttled by British forces during the siege of 1779 in an effort to prevent French warships from using the harbor.

Old South's Street Appeal in Savannah | Along the unique city’s grid of straight streets and inner city squares, historic preservation in Savannah embraces street appeal and elegance associated with the Old South. Part of fun-filled a journey in Savannah, is to discover that appearances matter … a lot! For example, among other approvals, a Certificate of Appropriateness is required to alter the exterior appearance, including sidewalks and the color of structures.

Scholar Laura Bell Palmer and her grandson Malcolm Bell III asserted that the grids and squares in 17th century Beijing and in Sicily’s old fortified towns respectively were found in Oglethorpe’s design in Savannah.

Noble Jones was a man on whom Georgia founder, James Oglethorpe, could depend. Jones, who had served as carpenter, constable and doctor to the colonists, was also the man who laid out the city of Augusta, when Oglethorpe ordered him to do so in 1736. That same year Oglethorpe and the Trustees leased 500 acres to Jones, who began work on a combination plantation/fort along the Skidaway River, one of a myriad of Georgia's coastal rivers. Two other colonists, John Fallowfield and Henry Parker, joined Jones on this "Isle of Hope."

The Pirates' House dining | Savannah's famous Pirates House restaurant is located on one of the most historic spots in Georgia. It is here that Trustees Garden, the first experimental garden in America, was located. The small building adjoining the Pirates' House was erected in 1734 and is said to be the oldest house in the State of Georgia. The building originally housed the gardener of Trustees' Garden. His office and tool room were in the front section, while his stable occupied the back room and his hayloft, upstairs. The bricks used in the construction of this old "Herb House," as it is called today, were manufactured only a short block away under the bluff by the Savannah River where the colonists began brick making as early as 1733.

Savannah is mentioned numerous times in the classic, Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. Tis' said that old Captain Flint, who originally buried the fabulous treasure on Treasure Island, died at The Pirates’ House in an upstairs room. In the novel, Flint’s faithful mate, Billy Bones, was at his side when he breathed his last breathe, muttering "Darby, bring aft the rum." Today many swear that the ghost of Captain Flint still haunts The Pirates' House on moonless nights. Photo used with permission. © Tom Warner.

Bull Street was thought of as a boulevard and promenade (both French terms) and the fountain served as a focal point of a long vista, all the way from the Exchange, which was City Hall. In an economic context, the park and the fountain would not have been possible if Savannah were not experiencing economic prosperity.

SAVANNAH Georgia (April 2, 2013) — Haven’t you heard, “birds of a feather flock together” meaning, of course, those of similar tastes congregate in groups. We hope you’ll get away to Green Palm Inn for a summer vacation spot in Savannah … with hushed to playful scenes!

You might even love your last minute getaway more “coming in on a wing and a prayer” … winging it, last minute! Innkeeper Diane McCray is your go-to local insider for lovely summer days and summer nights in Savannah.

“Men of my age flock together; we are birds of a feather, as the old proverb says.” — Benjamin Jowett’s 1856 translation of Plato’s Republic (circa 380 BC).

We hope you’ll consider it! Get away for a few summer days in Savannah.

Arrive with a “Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah” kind of free spiritedness, singing like Mr. Bluebird is on your shoulder! “Plenty of sunshine headin’ my way”! Yes, sirree, Summer Solstice (June 21, 2013) really has more sunshine headin’ your way in Savannah!

An Extra Four Hours & 12 Minutes for Summer Solstice!

Along Savannah’s North Latitude (32° 5′ 0″ N) — 32 degrees north of the Earth’s equatorial plane — the sun is visible for 14 hours, 15 minutes during the summer solstice and 10 hours, 3 minutes during the winter solstice. That’s 4 hours, 12 minutes more than in winter!

And, Arrive in Time for the Summer Wind

Savannah’s own free-spirited hometown lad, Johnny Mercer, wrote the words to the song Summer Wind. Tybee Island beach is about 20 minutes from Green Palm Inn in the downtown Savannah historic district.

The Summer Wind
Johnny Mercer / Henry Mayer / Hans Bradtke

The summer wind, came blowin’ in – from across the sea
It lingered there, so warm and fair – to walk with me
All summer long, we sang a song – and strolled on golden sand
Two sweethearts, and the summer wind

Like painted kites, those days and nights – went flyin’ by
The world was new, beneath a blue – umbrella sky
Then softer than, a piper man – one day it called to you
And I lost you, to the summer wind

The autumn wind, and the winter wind – have come and gone
And still the days, those lonely days – go on and on
And guess who sighs his lullabies – through nights that never end
My fickle friend, the summer wind.

We hope you’ll return this summer to loveable Green Palm Inn in Savannah, Georgia — an idyllic south Georgia vacation spot for fickle travelers (the ones who love a change of scenery, food, and local culture)!

SAVANNAH Georgia (August 1, 2012) — “Walk Savannah through the trees!” says avid walker and historic B&B innkeeper Diane McCray from Green Palm Inn.

Let life get more personable. Take a slower pace. Do more than imagine the scenic views in Savannah — America’s most beautiful city.

Walk under the canopy of Live Oak trees. Pass colorful Crepe Myrtles and fragrant Confederate Jasmine, while recalling America’s heroic, historic, and character-rich tales.

What is it about the people of the south … passing along sidewalks or in cafes, nodding their friendly hello? One does not want to miss soaking up this wonderland of southern charm in Savannah, Georgia USA!

“In Edith Wharton’s novels, walks are important. Characters walk for exercise. They walk for entertainment. And if you’re staying at a country house, you take a walk. Walks can be sexy.” — Source: Frisbee – A Book Journal

Staying in the seamen’s cottages of Green Palm Inn may remind one of a country house.

Tourists would be smack dab in the inner village of Old Savannah — one of the best places on Earth to live, visit, and lodge. We think Savannah’s walkable city is an important enticement, part of the historically friendly spirit in this Hostess City of the South!

“If trees could talk, the stories they’d tell….”
- Source: City of Savannah web site.

‘Let’s walk!’ is the familiar phrase from Green Palm Inn’s Diane McCray, an avid walker.

In spite of early mornings, getting breakfast ready by 7:00 a.m. Irregardless of grocery shopping and crisscrossing downtown to accommodate rose bouquets and special chocolates for the inn’s guests 365/7. This breakfast inn’s on-the-go innkeeper chooses to walk as much as practical.

“We had a late afternoon meeting on the opposite side of the Landmark Savannah Historic District from Green Palm Inn,” shares marketing executive Sandy Traub. “Diane tells me she will walk and meet me there. That may not seem extraordinary, until you know it was one of the hottest days of the year! She’s fearless!”

Visitors adore Savannah’s ‘Let’s walk!’ appeal.

And, real estate professionals love to tout the benefits.

“To put it plainly, despite our love affair with the automobile, Americans enjoy taking to the streets, sidewalks, paths, and courtyards of a place to get a coffee, relax, and take in the sights and sounds. And, according to NeighborhoodScout’s exclusive and first quantitative walkable score index, the Savannah City Center neighborhood is one of the most walkable neighborhoods in America.” — Source: NeighborhoodScout.com

One mesmerized tourist in Forsyth Park voiced it: “There’s a mansion at the end of every walkway!” It is no wonder then that Walking Magazine named Savannah to the top of its America’s Best Walking Cities list!

Livestrong.com erroneously points to limited Savannah parking as the reason people walk. Parking decks are sprinkled throughout the historic district. Correctly, however, they point to “more than 30 agencies that specialize in walking tours.”

So, ‘Let’s walk!’ and imagine the tales the trees will tell. Stroll and shop in less frenzied, genteel style along city sidewalks during late Friday nights (when shops open until 9:00 p.m.) and for Christmas holidays. Crisscross the historic district in the spirit of a village outing when attending the Savannah Music Festival (March 21 – April 6, 2013) or Savannah Tour of Homes (March 21 – 24, 2013).

Walk and pause. Visit Savannah not only for its stories and beauty, but take Savannah to heart by walking. Green Palm Inn is one of those mansions at the end of the walkway.

SAVANNAH Georgia — Arrive in Savannah for a weekend getaway amazingly carefree. Borrowing a popular 20th Century phrase, we’d say get ready to be ‘footloose and fancy-free‘ [carefree]. If you think the fancy-free phrase seems contemporary, it began in Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Nights Dream, 1598.

But we’d like to think fancy free [carefree] can be any time, especially in spring’s outdoor wonderland in Savannah’s beautiful American South!

Since you would be in Savannah, songwriter Johnny Mercer’s hometown (photo of statue in Ellis Square), we’re confident to say, you’ll love the “Cool, cool, cool of the evening” (lyrics by Mr. Mercer).

The astronomical spring (Northern Hemisphere) begins on
Wednesday, March 20, 2013. Summer begins in America’s southland on June 21, 2013.

Savannah itself is an event, so the select happenings below are simply frosting on the cake — something extra to consider while on your city trip!
